Black+Blum
Black+Blum is a creative Anglo-Swiss partnership steeped in innovation. It creates and markets products for the home and office, combining ruthless practicality with a mischievous and intellectually-satisfying design aesthetics.
Black+Blum joined forces in 1988 and the partnership is based in London, according to Dan Black and Martin Blum 'the European heart of design'.
As a design consultancy firm they advised companies on any creative aspect. This accumulating insight into different markets and different aspects of product design led the duo develop their own range of products.
Dan Black grew up discussing products and design with his family from an early age. His passion and skill for design was recognized in a first class honors degree from the respected Design for Industry course at the University of Northumbria (Newcastle).
He gained further professional foresight working at IDEO (London), Frog Design (California) and under Julian Brown at Studio Brown (Bath). Dan completed successful group projects with his friend Martin Blum whilst studying in Newcastle, sparking the idea for the creative partnership that is now black + blum.
Martin Blum was born and raised in Switzerland. An early apprenticeship as a commercial clerk with a product design company provided his first insight on the development and distribution of products. He then gained an industrial design degree from the highly respected course at the University of Northumbria (Newcastle).
Martin’s cultural and design reference is a juxtaposition of his Swiss youth and enduring love affair for all things British. His work has been acknowledged by internationally recognized design awards.
Black+Blum are driven by the opportunity to give each design its own unique character and soul. They aim to create functional products that will charm and entertain.
Each Black+Blum product is always a joint input of Dan Black's and Martin Blum's personalities. Black+Blum designs have won numerous important design awards and are also represented in the permanent collection of many modern art and design museums around the world.
