The Enignum sculptural wooden furniture by Irish designer and artist Joseph Walsh look like they have escaped from the pages of a storybook. Dreamy and unique, the series expresses the designer’s love of nature and wood. Their fluid shapes allowed from the material form an exquisite sculptural composition.
The Enignum sculptural furniture collection succeeds in fulfilling the designer’s initial perspective. Joseph Walsh wishes to create surrounding objects that possess values beyond their function or aesthetic. Works of art that possess intelligence in their creation and with which one can interact and get their senses stimulated.
Enignum collection consists of sculptural wooden furniture of every kind, chairs, tables, shelves, canopy bed and more. In the Enignum series of work the wood has been stripped to thin layers. The designer kept manipulating and reconstructing the layers into free form compositions and fix them in position. In this process each piece not only reveals an honesty of the structure but a sculpted form which is a unique collaboration of man and material. The title derives from the Latin words Enigma (‘mystery’) and Lignum (‘wood’): “The mystery of the composition lies in the material.”
Each piece of the Enignum sculptural furniture collection is one of a kind, handmade by Joseph Walsh himself, with the help of a small team of professionals of the Joseph Walsh Studio (1999). Their uniqueness has given them a place in some of the world’s most well-known museums and private collections.
